The ONEX Shipyards in Syros were visited on Saturday, 10/18/2025, by the Minister of Development, Mr. Takis Theodorikakos, where he was welcomed by the General Director, Mr. Giannis Vamvakousis.
During the visit, the Minister was informed about the progress of the new five-year investment program for the holistic reconstruction of the ONEX Shipyards in Syros. The program, amounting to over 14 million euros, funded by its own capital, inaugurates the second phase of development after the successful rescue of the unit and focuses on the triptych of Safety – Environment – Competitiveness. It includes five main axes: the upgrade of floating docks (€5 million), the reactivation of the Syncrolift after 20 years (€2.5 million), the modernization of cranes (€2.5 million), the energy upgrade of infrastructures (€2 million), and the environmental and technological modernization with robotic and hydroblasting systems (€2 million).
The ONEX Shipyards in Syros employ 450–500 workers and carry out over 80 repair and conversion projects annually on an equivalent number of ships, significantly contributing to the local and national economy.
Mr. Theodorikakos was given a tour of the shipyards, spoke with the employes, and was informed about the full upgrade program of the shipyard facilities.
The Minister referred to the strategic importance of the shipbuilding industry, stating: "I consider shipyards a productive unit with a national strategic role." It is not possible for our homeland to be among the leading maritime powers of the world and not also be among the leading countries in the shipbuilding industry. And this is a commitment we are putting into action."
He emphasized that supporting the shipbuilding industry is a priority for the Government, as it strengthens the economy and security of the country. As he mentioned, "the shipyards of Syros practically demonstrate the great potential of the Greek shipbuilding industry." "We support the management's efforts to upgrade and modernize the facilities, which make the shipyards more productive and competitive, ensuring safety for the workers and fostering a spirit of cooperation that guaranties significant results."
On behalf of ONEΧ, the General Manager, Mr. Giannis Vamvakousis presented to the Minister the development prospects of the unit, explaining that "the new investment program marks the holistic restructuring of the Shipyards with the aim of sustainability, technological advancement, and job security."
The shipyards in Syros, under the management of ONEX, are evolving into a multifunctional industrial hub in the Aegean, capable of serving commercial, energy, and offshore projects, contributing to the strengthening of the national industrial base and the energy transition of the country.
